In the early part of 2001 my business partner, Nazifa Duranovic and I dared to dream. We were operating a viable film crew catering company but were at the point where we required a new and modern vehicle to actively pursue new contracts.
Having purchased a near new Hino Cab Chassis we faced the daunting prospect of finding the right person or company to bring our dream alive.
Nazifa and I were introduced to Bird Refrigeration in May 2001 and we immediately established a wonderful rapport.
Although Nazifa and I had firm design concepts we had no idea of how to make the many facets of this quite daunting construction job come to fruition.
The answer to all our problems was Bird Refrigeration. They listened to us, guided us, poured their heart, soul and vast expertise into the final design and construction of our mobile commercial kitchen.
The pan and the kitchen had to be designed and built from scratch. Our needs included walk-in cold room, built-in freezer, stainless steel benches, food storage space, sinks, equipment storage spaces, clean and grey water storage, plumbing, electrical requirements, access e.g. steps and entry, extractor systems, hotwater systems, equipment installation, gas lines, emergency exits, floor coverings - all to health standards and all to our own satisfaction.
Bird not only displayed creative genius in bringing our dream to life but displayed enormous professionalism and attention to minute detail in every facet of the design and construction of our vehicle.
The completion of our truck was a labour of love for all but I especially thank Bird for creating and building such a thing of beauty.
In August 2001 our truck went to work for the first time on a mini-series called Beastmaster. It immediately attracted an enormous amount of attention and continues to do so to this day.
We will continue to recommend Bird and the team and have no hesitation in expressing our satisfaction and gratitude both professionally.

This serves to recommend Bird Refrigeration Pty Ltd. Over the past 11 years Bird Refrigeration has looked after the majority of our on-site and transport refrigeration requirements. This has often included on site stainless steel and sheet metal projects that have gone hand in hand with the refrigeration needs of the various outlets for our growing company.
Work completed includes:
- Refurbishing and refit of refrigeration plant at Euronatural Fine Foods cold storage facility and wholesale factory at Capalaba
- Coldrooms, freezers, dual temperature rooms, numerous miscellaneous sheet metal projects and stainless benching, handrails and glass racks at Tanja's Beach Pavilion Resort, Caloundra
- Coldroom and freezer at Tanja's Cafe/Restaurant, Wellington Point
- Coldroom and various stainless steel/sheet metal project at Tanja's Cloister Cafe, St Lucia
- Coldroom at Gourmet complex at Tanja's Cafe/Restaurant Coorparoo
- Coldroom for Self Indulgence cafe, Thornlands
- Two x 3.6m dual temperature refrigerated transport vehicles
Currently under production is a third refrigerated vehicle which will have an Icehawk off-engine drive along with 240 volt electric standby refrigeration which is due for completion in the next four weeks.
Work completed by Bird Refrigeration for our company over this time is extensive and we hope to continue dealing with them in the future. I have found Bird Refrigeration to provide a very high level of service and Rodney in particular always makes himself available in cases of emergencies. This sense of commitment to his work is the reason why I have continued to use Bird Refrigeration for the last eleven years. On behalf of Suncoast Food Distributors I would like to recommend Bird Refrigeration for the work carried out for us over the past eleven years. Among the many varied jobs carried out, Bird Refrigeration engineered, supplied and installed the cold rooms and freezer at our distribution outlets in Caloundra in 1998. This is consisted of a 14.5 storage freezer, a 7.8m cold room and a 6m chiller. This equipment has in the years since been serviced and maintained by Bird and will continue to be.
In addition to this we have had three refrigerated truck bodies manufactured, the first in 2000 with eutectic refrigeration system, in 2001 a truck body with Icehawk off-engine drive refrigeration system and in 2003 a truck body with Icehawk off-engine drive as well as well as 240volt electric standby refrigeration. All of our refrigerated transport vehicles are currently serviced and maintained by Bird Refrigeration.
There have been many other smaller jobs carried out over this time including repairs to and refurbishment of our older vehicles, including upgrades of the refrigeration systems. In February 2005 one of our old existing trucks was converted by Bird, from chiller to freezer application. Our first refrigerated body for 2007 is currently under construction.
During the time of dealing with Bird Refrigeration, I have always had utmost confidence in the work completed and the after sales service provided. All work is personally designed and supervised and no job is too small or too much trouble. It gives me the greatest pleasure to have the opportunity to provide a recommendation both personally and professionally for Rod Bird and Bird Refrigeration. I first met Rod in 1990 when I was manager of the Rolling Surf Resort in Caloundra. The resort was upgrading the kitchen as well as refurbishing the eating area. There was a new hot and cold food buffet manufactured entirely by Rod and his staff that was in use until the recent demolishment of the building. There were also new coldrooms and a new freezer installed, as well as stainless steel benching and other sheet metal requirements as per health department requirements.
In 1993 I bought my own retail food outlets and didn't consider anyone else except Bird for the refrigeration or the sheetmetal work required. During my years of having the shop Bird Refrigeration redid all the sop fittings as well as manufacturing three mobile coldrooms on trailers. During this time we also had Bird install stainless steel benches and a coldroom in the kitchen of our new home.
In 1998 our business expanded to ON-location Catering and we had a specialised food vending trailer designed and manufactured by Bird Refrigeration. This trailer is a mobile kitchen complete with 240v electric refrigeration as well as eutectic refrigeration in the coldroom, water storage and waste takes, stainless steel preparation areas and sink, 240v and 12v lighting, fully weatherproofed lift up shutter doors along with several purpose build storage compartments.
Our latest project has been a very specialist four wheel drive mobile kitchen. This project was months in the research, development and planning stage prior to constriction. Rod Bird designed and engineered the mobile kitchen from he list of ideas and requirements put forward to him which included: both 240v and 12v power including a distribution board with earth leakage protection, a eutectic coldroom compartment, eutectic freezer drawers, stainless steel work benches and preparation area, stainless steel sink with hot and cold running water, a stainless steel console with drawers, purpose built storage compartments plus innumerable other features.
I would definitely not consider anyone else but Bird to do any job whatsoever concerning refrigeration or sheet metal fabrication. My recommendation comes with the highest regard for the Team as a very skilled and professional tradespeople. Rod Bird is a person of impeccable character. It is our pleasure to provide a recommendation for Rodney Bird and his Team. In the last couple of years our company has had many differant projects completed by Bird Refrigeration.
Initially, we had Bird custom design our seafood vending truck body. This vehicle was designed with off-engine drive refrigeration as well as a 240volt electric standby facility. Bird Refrigeration also manufactured the stainless steel displays and other custom built fittings. We were so pleased with the workmanship, we then took our other vehicle to be refitted, serviced and brought up to Health Department Standards.
This year our company has branched into a retail seafood outlet which was built from scratch. The shop required a new coldroom with two way ice storage compartments, a coldroom with stainless steel block door inserts fitted, refurbishment of an existing commercial four door glass refrigerator and a large storage freezer. In addition to the this Refrigeration staff completed numerous sheet metal projects including walkways, external door fascia and stainless steel pipework covers. All work was supervised personally by Rod Bird. The electricians working on the site sought Rod's advice on several occasions regarding appropriate electrical and power requirements for other parts of the fit-out.
In closing, I would like to add that all work carried out has been of the utmost professional and high quality workmanship. We will continue to have a long-term relationship with Bird Refrigeration in the future. Rod Bird's integrity, professionalism and obliging nature have made it our pleasure to deal with him on every occasion, his staff follow his example. There has been no problem that has arisen that hasn't been dealt with calmly and efficiently.
